The Rev. Ralph John Backman, 95, of Marinette, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015, at the Luther Home. He was born March 9, 1920 at Dollar Bay, Michigan to Oscar W.R. and Hilda Backman.
He spent his early life in Dollar Bay where he was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church and attended local schools. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. On August 24, 1946, he married the former Hilma Simonson in Astoria, Oregon. Ralph went on to earn a baccalaureate degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., in 1949. He was employed as an accountant for several years in the publishing business before entering seminary training at Suomi College in Hancock, Michigan. Ralph was ordained on June 8, 1953.
As a Lutheran Pastor, he first served chaplaincies with the National Lutheran Council and the Ministry to Defense Communities in Augusta, Georgia and Berea, Ohio. He went on to serve churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Bethany, Almena, Wis., Bethlehem, Wing, N.D., St. Stephen's, Stephenson, Mich. and Gethsemane, Wallace, Mich., Calvary, Two Rivers, Wis. Grace, Pembine, Wis. and Bethany, Quinnesec, Mich. In retirement, he and his wife have presently been residing at Northland Village in Marinette.
Pastor Backman is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hilma; one son, Rodney J. (Joanne) Backman of Richmond Hill, Ga.; daughters, Mary A. (Thomas) Hayward of Menominee, Lisa E. (Michael) Smith of Tucson, Ariz. and Kaye A. (Robert) Carleton of Eagle River, Alaska; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Hilda Backman; a son, Mark A. Backman; a brother, Waldo Backman; and a sister, Winifred Forsyth.
A visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Keith Kolstad officiating.
