Obituary

Robert D. (Bob) Saxton, 73, of Marinette passed away at Aurora BayCare in Green Bay on April 13, 2020 from natural causes. He was born on August 27, 1946 to the late Burton D. and Eileen R. (Clarkson) Saxton, Jr. in Toledo, Ohio. Robert married Margaret (Peggy) Bouche on February 14, 1980 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bob served in the U.S. Army enlisting in 1966 and retiring in 1988 after 22 years. He served 2 tours in Vietnam, the first during the Tet offensive when most of his buddies were killed and only three survived. He also did 3 tours in Germany and 2 tours in Korea. He received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
Bob was very involved with Veterans organizations including the Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW, DAV, the American Legion, the Military 20-Year Club, Amvets and Vietnam Veterans of America. Always wanting to serve his fellow veterans, he spent many hours volunteering at the Iron Mountain VA center and drove the DAV van to Milwaukee VA facilities. For over 20 years he spoke to students at Marinette High School about the Vietnam War.
Bob loved woodworking, puzzles, trains and movies. He earned his BS Degree from Midland University and was working on his Master’s Degree in Bible studies at Liberty University. He delivered the Green Bay Press Gazette for many years and had operated Saxton’s Gifts with his wife, Peggy. Bob loved having holiday gatherings at home, especially Christmas with the whole family.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Peggy; children, Tori (Brad) Gustafson of Marinette, SFC (Ret.) Anthony (Nichole) Saxton and CPT Burton J. (Gabriela) Saxton both of Elgin, S.C. and Amy Durrett of Ohio; grandchildren, Elijah, Isaiah, Dylan, Landon, Delaney, Isabella, Ava, Robbie Grace, Amanda, Scott and Tyler; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Michael Saxton of Michigan; a sister, Beverly McKiddy of Arizona; in-laws, Michelle Dulak of Marinette, MaryBeth Beutler of Oregon, James Bouche of Wausau, Wis., Dick Hearden of Green Bay; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert D., Jr.; a sister, Irene; a brother, Burton III (Sandra); mother and father-in-law, Mary and Jim Bouche; and sister-in-law, Patricia Hearden.
Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette on Monday, June 22, 2020 from 3 until 6 p.m. with a Veteran’s service to follow. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the funeral home with IMVA Chaplain, Herb Becker presiding. A military burial will follow at Forest Home Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established.
