Obituary

Paul E. Luhring, 83, passed away peacefully in the early morning of November 12, 2018 in Marinette, WI. Paul was born in Faribault, MN, May 6, 1935, the son of Elwin and Florence Luhring. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1953.

After high school Paul attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental Music in 1957. As part of his music education he became a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity While in college Paul met Beverly Ann Jorgensen of Tyler, MN and they were married in 1958. Paul’s first job out of college was teaching Vocal Music and American History in Wayzata, MN. In 1959, Paul and Beverly moved to Shawano, WI where Paul taught Junior High School Band for 11 years. During his time in Shawano, he enlisted in the Army Reserve and was called to duty in 1961 with the 32nd Division Band in Fort Lewis, WA. Upon his return to Shawano, he continued with his teaching career and received a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison 1966. In 1969, Paul and family moved to Marinette, WI where he served as the Director of Bands and Head of the Music Department until his retirement in 1992.

During his time teaching in Marinette, Paul was very active in music education both in the Marinette schools and throughout the state. He was an ad hoc member of the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Marinette, where he founded the CommUniversity Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble in the years 1977-1985. He served as the State Band Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association from 1985-89. He was a Field Representative for Wisconsin School Music Association from 1993-2010. He also worked with the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Band Association where he was Chairman of the NBA All-State Band from 1985-95 and Chairman of the New Music Commission Project from 1997-2010.

In retirement, Paul continued his musical endeavors. He founded PEL Music Publications as owner, publisher and music arranger. Many of his arrangements are permanent fixtures on the Wisconsin state solo and ensemble performance lists. In 1993 he continued his work in band music as founder and conductor of the Northeastern Wisconsin Concert Band, Marinette, WI until 2007. Although he gave up conducting duties, Paul continued playing Baritone Horn in the band until the spring of 2017.

In addition to his musical efforts, Paul was also involved in many community organizations in the Marinette Area. He was a member of the Marinette Masonic Lodge and served as Master of the Lodge in 1998. He was Secretary and Past President of the Marinette Lions Club. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and delivered Meals on Wheels through the Northland Lutheran Home.

Paul was known for his involvement in music, but his other hobbies included photography, wine making, travel and reading. Over the years, Paul was always proud to come in contact with many of his former students who remarked how he influenced their lives.

Paul is survived by his wife Beverly, who celebrated 60 years of marriage together in 2018 and their two sons, Gregg of Green Bay, WI and Mark (Cathy) of Waunakee, WI. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Emma Luhring and Caitlin Oleson and brother Alan (Mary Linda) Luhring of Boulder, CO.

The Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home will host a memorial service and visitation on Saturday November 17, 2018. Visitation will be at 10:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am.
