Obituary

Maryon Lillian (“Babe”) Boren
Maryon Lillian (“Babe”) Boren, 96, passed from this life on December 30, 2017 in Appleton, WI. She was a life-long resident of Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI until moving to The Heritage in Appleton in 2015 to be near her family. Babe died peacefully surrounded by her family and comforted by her great Christian faith and belief in the resurrection.
Babe was born in 1921 in Menominee, MI. She was the youngest of the eight children born to Frans August (“Gus”) Peterson and Mary Kottke. As the youngest in the family she was dubbed “the babe” and as a result Babe became her life-long name. She grew up in Menominee and graduated from Menominee High School in 1939. She met her husband Clark H. (“Buzz”) Boren on his father’s sailboat during a photoshoot as part of her role as Queen of the Great Lakes. The two were married on April 7, 1945 in Marinette. Babe worked as a children’s librarian at Spies Public Library in Menominee and then as an Assistant to the Headmaster of the Milwaukee University School while Buzz completed his medical training. She and Buzz moved back to Marinette where he entered medical practice at the Boren Clinic. Babe’s life in Marinette was busy raising three children and actively participating in community activities. Babe and Buzz spent their summers boating on the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Babe was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for more than fifty years and particularly treasured her participation in the Bible Study Group. She was also a long- time member of PEO Chapter BK and the Dickens Club. Babe was a strong proponent of life-long reading and education having served multiple terms on the Stephenson Library Board. She was also a long-term member and supporter of Friends of the Library.

Babe will always be remembered as a kind, caring, and welcoming person who made friends easily wherever she went. She had a great love of family and was very supportive of her children and grandchildren. Babe loved Christmas and was able to share this last Christmas with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In the words of one of her grandchildren written shortly before she died: “You have inspired us to be kind, caring, open-minded accepting people…these things describe who you are.”
Babe is survived by two of her three children: Clark H. Boren, Jr. (Victoria) and Pamela Jean Gruner (Dean). She is further survived by her eight grandchildren: Kelly DuBord (John), Kevin Boren (Carrie), Jenna Boren (Matthias), Matthew Boren (Barbi), Nathan Boren (Mimi), Katie Amaya (Renzo), Erica Liesmaki (Christopher) and David Gruner (Jenny). Also surviving are step-grandchildren Meghan, Jenna, Sarah, Matthew, Charlee, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews . Additionally, brother-in law James A. Boren, MD and sister-in-law Jean Boren, who both were especially important to Babe, survive as well. She was preceded in death by her husband Clark H. Boren, MD, son John Scott Boren, her parents, seven siblings and dear sister-in-law Doris Boren.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Heritage community for welcoming Mom with such large and open hearts, truly making her feel at home. They also wish to thank the staff at the Heritage, Peabody Manor, and Thedacare Hospice for such wonderful care and compassion, not only to Mom, but to us as well. Thanks also to Mom’s physician, Jack Anderson, MD. who held a special place in her heart.
Visitation will be from 9 until 11 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Menominee, MI with services to follow. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Babe’s name.
