Obituary

Jean Ames went home to be with the Lord on Thursday September 24, 2020 in Green Bay, WI. Born on April 8th, 1916 in Saybrook, Illinois, Eunice “Jean” was the third of five children born to Dickey and Meda Merritt. She married Forrest Ames in 1936 and together raised three children, Robert, Kathleen (Sancomb), and Mary Jean (Heft).
Jean Ames was a beloved member of the Marinette community for many years and she will be missed by the generations who knew her. She had a kind and generous heart. Her love of family, friends, and community was evident in her dedication in helping others, and bringing joy through her love of music.
Jean was a self-taught pianist who played in the Forrest Ames Orchestra for twelve years, accompanied high school students and penned her own songs. When at the piano, she played with a glint in her eye, as she got people tapping their feet or dancing to her melodies. Her adventurous outlook took Jean and her family on travels throughout the US and beyond. Studying maps and navigating kept her mind curious and nimble and she could be found exploring the back roads of the Midwest where her story began. She served as a Sunday School teacher and women's group member at Marinette First Methodist Church, and was a Girl Scout Camp Director. She was ageless and wintered several years in Arizona, and even scored a hole-in-one at age 82!
Jean’s faith in Jesus Christ was central to her life. She will be remembered as a peaceful and supportive soul, who could be counted on to share a laugh, lend a shoulder to cry on, or celebrate the joys of the generations of family she loved and nurtured. Her home was a sanctuary to all, and her family felt loved in her presence. We are grateful for the long life she lived and for her. Her family and friends will miss her but take peace in knowing we are all better people for
knowing her, and we celebrate a life so beautifully and graciously lived.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Forrest; granddaughter, Nicole; and son-in-law, Robert; as well as other relatives.
She is survived by son, Robert (Susan); and daughters, Susie, Mary Jean (Rod); 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.
The family is grateful to Jean’s wonderful friends and neighbors for their love and support.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at a future date. Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home is assisting the family..
