Obituary

Hilma E. Backman, 95, of Marinette passed away Monday, September 9, 2019, at her home. She was born September 24, 1923 in Astoria, Oregon to Emil and Maria (Oja) Simonson. She spent her early life in Astoria where she attended primary and secondary schools. Hilma came to Upper Michigan to further her education and was a graduate of Suomi College in Hancock. She returned to Astoria during World War II and worked for the Red Cross at Fort Clatsop, Oregon. She was married to Ralph John Backman in Astoria on August 24, 1946. During Ralph’s ministry as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, they resided in several regional communities. During the latter part of Hilma’s working career, she was employed in banking management. They retired to Arizona and later moved to Marinette to reside at Northland Village.
Hilma is survived by four children, Rodney J. (Joanne) Backman of Richmond Hill, Ga., Mary A. (Thomas) Hayward of Menominee, Lisa E. (Michael) Smith of Tucson, Ariz. and Kaye A. (Robert) Carleton of Eagle River, Alaska; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; a son, Mark; and eleven brothers and sisters.
A visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette on Friday, October 11, 2019 (please note date) from 9 until 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Keith Kolstad officiating.
