Obituary

Francis A. Bowan passed into his new eternal life on November 14th, 2018. The windows of heaven were open and waiting for him!!

He was a kind, gentle, and positive person, and he was loved by so many! His caretakers, his church family, and especially his family, loved him so much for his great attitude and caring ways. He always spread cheer - with his ‘little waves to his caretakers at Rennes East, and openly expressed his gratitude for his church family who brought him to his place of worship for so long.

Fran was raised in Marathon County, Wisconsin, where his father was a Pentecostal minister. He remained a strong believer in the mission of the Assembly of God Church, and was a long-time member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Francis attended North Central University in Minneapolis, MN where he majored in theology before joining the US Marine Corps. He retired after working for the State of Wisconsin and along with his former wife, truck-farmed and sold produce and flowers at area Farm Markets. Besides the wonderful organic vegetables that they grew, Francis was also very well-known for his Gladiola Farms!

We are all going to miss him so much! He and his wife Helen, were married for 17 years but knew each other for a lifetime through church. His current wife, and his deceased wife, were good friends. He was very lucky to have had two such caring wives!

He worked hard at talking Helen into marrying him - but the clincher was leaving a watermelon on her back porch (he knew how much she loved watermelons)! It was a super good match! Helen has always been a great caretaker, and she took really really good care of her husband! Even when her husband’s health was failing, Helen was his primary caretaker at their home - which they hoped to share for a longer time. She was extremely diligent when he had to move to the nursing home, and talked with staff about his care on a regular basis. Helen kept him first and foremost - always!

Francis is survived by his wife Helen Litts Peterson Bowan, six children - Barbara Screnock, Frances (Alan) Yaeger, Georgette (Glen) Zellner, Nellie (Gene) Beland, Jeff (Pam) Peterson, and Jim (LeAnne) Peterson, over 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog Daisy.
His parents, The Reverend Alfred and Ione Bowan, and his former wife Jeanne Stank Bowan, pre-deceased him.

A celebration of Fran’s life will be held at Calvary Church in Marinette, WI on Monday, November 19th with visitation from 11:00 until 1:00pm. After the 1:00pm service, a military salute will honor his service in the US Marine Corps. Lunch at the church will follow.

Expressions of sympathy and other communication can be sent to Helen Bowan, in care of Nellie and Gene Beland, 1107 13th Street, Menominee, MI 49858.

Fran’s family is extremely grateful to his Calvary Church Family, Pastor Tim Hawthorne for being with us, the Rennes-East caretaker and staff, and SouthernCare Hospice Service for the love and care he received.

Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home is assisting the family.
