Obituary

Elizabeth Joanne Murray Wood, 93, of Marinette, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning May 22, 2016. The daughter of John Patrick and Mary (Reiter) Murray, Elizabeth was born on October 15, 1922, in Menominee, MI. She was raised at 2050 Maple Avenue, Marinette, WI.
Betty graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1940. She worked for Scott Paper Company doing secretarial work. While she attended college for two years, she worked in Chicago, Ill., for the Chicago Northwestern Railway in the business office. When she returned to Marinette she worked for the Menominee Paper Company for many years doing secretarial work. Later, Betty became a certified medical transcriptionist and worked for Marinette General Hospital (Bay Area Medical Center) until her retirement. She also worked part-time for the Marinette Answering Service.
As an active member of Holy Family Parish in Marinette, she sang in the choir and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Betty was a music and opera lover, and enjoyed reading and attending opera showings in Green Bay. She loved to play bridge and pinochle and play rummy with her grandchildren. She was known for her Christmas rituals of making anise candy to distribute and share with happiness. She had many exceptionally good friends and neighbors who helped her and she enjoyed their company.
Betty played the piano by memory, by feel, by chord and by heart. She played patriotic pieces and all the world's songs, humming and singing along until all who listened were filled with joy. Betty resided on the shores of Green Bay overlooking the beacon of Green Island's Fresnel lens beaming homeward. She was a beacon as well, illuminating the world for those who needed light. She is now shining upon us from above.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents John P. Murray and Mary V. Reiter, her older sister Mary C. Hoffman, and brother, Lt. John J. Murray, a pilot killed in action during WWII June 1, 1944. Betty is survived by three children, Timothy (Lisa) Wood of Phoenix, AZ., Paul (Kathy) Wood of Tallahassee, FL., and Mariclaire Wood England of Woodbury, MN. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Marcus, Delaney, and Normandy Wood; Jazmine Wood; and David and Elizabeth England.
Cherished friends may visit from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home, 610 Marinette Ave, Marinette, WI, on Thursday June 2, 2016 (please note date).
