Obituary

Edward “Ski” Martin Kowalczyk Sr., 89, Peshtigo, formerly of Tinley Park, Ill., passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Rennes Health and Rehab-East, Peshtigo. He was born March 23, 1930, to Frank and Rose (Krol) Kowalczyk of Chicago, Ill.
Ski enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps May 24, 1948, where he met his soon-to-be wife, Mary Jane Niemojuski, at a wedding. He served in the Marines and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant Dec. 1, 1952. He married both the love of his life and his strongest adversary June 25, 1956, in Norfolk, Va. After their time in the service, they moved to Marinette, before relocating to Tinley Park, Ill., where they raised their family. Many birthdays and holidays were celebrated at their home, where friends and family gathered regularly. After working for 31 years as a machine engineer in the bakery at a Jewel production plant in Melrose Park, Ill., he retired in 1995. He and his wife moved back to the area shortly thereafter to live with their son and his family in Porterfield, Wis., where the celebrations continued. Ski moved with the family to Menominee, Mich., before moving into Rennes Health and Rehab-East, Peshtigo, two years ago. Regardless of where he lived, he made many friends along the way.
Ski was a character, to say the least. He never shied away from the spotlight, playing his harmonica, teasing his favorites and cracking jokes. However, if he was on the opposite end of a joke he would respond with “I’ll kick your butt!” or “Hey now, be nice to grandpa.” He always enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was hunting or fishing, stoking a bon fire surrounded by family, raising and caring for his birds, or watching it on television. He loved being with his family and friends more than anything, and they always returned the sentiment.
Ski is survived by his sons: Marty (Daun) Kowalczyk, Menominee, Mich., and Gerald (Connie) Kowalczyk, Mokena, Ill.; grandchildren: Melissa Kowalczyk, Menominee; Jessica (Tolly) Tsiamas, Mokena; Jeremy (Maria) Kowalczyk, Homer Glenn, Ill.; Jennifer (Jacob Czapowski) Kowalczyk, Menominee; Jaclyn (Nick) Kuzlik, Mokena; Brett Kowalczyk, Menominee; and Joshua (Michelle) Kowalczyk, Downers Grove, Ill.; great-grandchildren: Logan, Adelyn, Tyler and Easton; and many friends and family. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; parents: Frank and Rose; siblings: Rose Buczkowski, Josephine (Bud) Holland, Stanley (Doris) Kowalczyk, John (Albina) Kowalczyk, Lottie Gidslavicz, Irene (Perry) Wilkins and Frank (Kathleen) Kowalczyk.
No services will be held at this time per his wishes. Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hansenonionmartell.com.
A special thanks goes to the staff at Rennes Health and Rehab-East for all of the care and encouragement they provided during his stay, as well as the staff at Aurora Bay Area Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a local veteran organization (American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, 20-Year Club, VFW, DAV, etc.).
