Obituary

Douglas J. Knowles, known as Wausaukee Bird Man, went home to Jesus on September 17, 2020 at the age of 73. Doug was born to Anna Leona Longwell and Cecil Knowles in Palm Beach, Fla. Doug served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 until 1969 and the Army from 1970 to 1971. He was an off-shore commercial fishing and crabbing man in Florida. He also worked as a mason and bricklayer, building beautiful homes with his crew using stone and brick work. Doug moved to the Wausaukee area in 2000. His joys and hobbies were camping, being camp cook, fishing, dancing and raising dogs for companions.
Doug was known as the Wausaukee Bird Man. He spent many years and hours building all types of bird houses. He loved spending time out in “Bird Land”. He often took time to sell houses at area craft shows. Doug loved unconditionally and touched the lives of everyone he met. He was a kind, loving and grateful man who loved his Lord. He will be greatly missed by those of us who were blessed to call him a friend.
Doug is survived by his son, Douglas Knowles, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and two step-brothers.
We would like to thank the Iron Mountain VA Hospital and Hospice for being there for Doug. For going out of your way to comfort him, bringing in food that he would enjoy and offering him care and love. Thank you for all you did for Doug in his last days.
