Obituary

Betty Harley, 88, of Marinette passed away Sunday evening, February 9, 2020, at her home. She was born in Brazeau, Wis., on September 22, 1931, the daughter of Ed and Evelyn (Schwittay) Heisel. This was during the Great Depression which forced Betty’s parents to endure hardships causing their separation. Betty was then raised living with her grandparents in Wausaukee, Wis.

She married Martin Harley in June of 1950, and they moved to Milwaukee in October of that year, where Martin was later employed with the Milwaukee Road railroad. Their original home was claimed for the I-94 freeway project in the 1960’s, so they moved to a surviving one in the Merrel Park area. When Martin retired from the railroad in the early 1980’s they relocated to Marinette. Betty became a charter member of Twin City Baptist Church. Martin preceded her in death in 1995.

When not busy raising her family, Betty volunteered for numerous organizations including the Milwaukee Health Dept. back in the 1970’s, Milwaukee Public Schools from 1975 - 1980,
Milwaukee County 1977, Veterans Administration during the 1980’s, and Marinette Senior Center for the 2000’s. Common fixture at many TCBC functions during the 1990’s - 2000’s too. She still found time to occasionally work as an Avon sales person.

Betty enjoyed gardening, feeding birds, riding her bike, playing bingo, watching TV and church functions, especially Vacation Bible School and the pot lucks.

Betty is survived by 5 children, Arlene (TJ) Ray, Alan (Roberta), Karen, John (Jane) and Jim; 7 Grandchildren, Priscilla Ray, Faith, Martin, Kim & A.J. Harley, Brennen & Erika Harley; and 5 Great grandchildren, Cierra, Jayden, Grant, Ryan and Kristy; as well as many nieces and nephews. Betty also had 2 step-brothers Ed Heisel and Harold Clarke.

Friends may call at Twin City Baptist Church, Marinette, on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the church with the Rev. Matthew DeCleene officiating. Spring burial will be in First Baptist Cemetery, Pound.
