Obituary

Bertil K. Johnson, 101, longtime Menominee resident, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Renaissance Assisted Living in Marinette. He was born April 6, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois to Oscar G. and Augusta (Carlson) Johnson, moving with his family to the Stephenson (Palestine) area in 1925.
In September of 1947 he married the former Mildred Blomquist. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2000. Bertil married June Peterson in April of 2003 and she preceded him in death in July of 2015.
Bertil was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps with the 15th Air Force Division. Based in Italy, he flew 52 missions as a B-24 tail gunner and was wounded in combat by German fighter planes. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He retired from Michigan Bell after 37 years of employment, working as a trouble shooter and lineman. He was a longtime member of the Community Covenant Church of Menominee and had also attended the Stephenson United Methodist Church. Bertil enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and meeting friends at the coffee shop each weekday morning.
He is survived by one daughter, Candace Kostelec of Rochester, Minn.; two grandchildren, Christopher Kostelec and Katherine (Anders) Larson; one brother, Robert Johnson and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wives, Mildred and June, he was preceded in death by sisters, Enid and Betty; and a brother, Everett.
Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette from 1 until 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2019. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Linnea Ek officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Menominee.
