Clarence J. Wery, 87, of Menominee, passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 2010, at Rennes Health Center-East in Peshtigo, with his family at his side. He was born October 21, 1922 in Stephenson, Michigan to Charles and Rose Wery.
Clarence spent his early life in the Stephenson area before entering the United States Army during World War II. He saw combat action in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. After returning to the area, he married the former Dorothy M. Dietrich on May 17, 1947, residing in Menominee for many years. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2005.
For many years Clarence operated his own independent trucking business, working for road construction companies in the Upper Peninsula. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Known as a skilled mechanic, he maintained his own equipment and repaired and restored tractors for resale. Clarence was an outdoorsman, who loved being at his cabin, deer hunting and fishing. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish in Birch Creek and the Menominee American Legion Post.
Clarence is survived by his daughter, Jill (Steve) Messenger of Marinette; his son, Michael Wery of Menominee; two granddaughters, Mandy (Justin) Hinkle of Pickens, So. Carolina and Andrea Antonson of Menominee; two grandsons, Aaron Messenger of Green Bay and Matthew Messenger of Marinette; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Damon and Mara; four sisters, Alice Baiel of Marinette, Viola Chatlosh and Josephine Schmidt of Menominee and his twin sister, Florence Beyer, also of Menominee; nieces and nephews; and many special friends, including good friends, Jim, Gail and Les. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Felix and Elmer Wery; and by a sister, Martha Coakley.
Friends may call at Holy Redeemer Church, Birch Creek, after 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church by Father Joseph Vandannoor. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Menominee.
Clarence’s family wishes to thank everyone who provided him with such good care, concern and prayers, especially Bay Area Cancer Center, Dr’s. Mertens and Chakrabarti and their staff.
