Arthur G. Nelson, 80, of Marinette, died Tuesday, January 5, 2010, after a long, courageous battle with Cancer. Art, better known as “Sonny”, was born in Marinette, Wisconsin on March 13, 1929 to the late Arthur and Isabelle (Simcox) Nelson. Sonny graduated from Marinette High School in 1947 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1949 for 4 years. On June 29, 1951, he married Avis A. Olson of Peshtigo and together began raising their three daughters. He was employed at Lauerman Brothers and Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust of Marinette, from which he retired. Sonny was a lifelong member of Pioneer Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Men’s Club, Marinette Elks Lodge, the American Legion, M & M Yacht Club, Marinette Moose Lodge and a member of the Salvation Army Board. He enjoyed spending a lot of time with his family going across the Bay to Fish Creek and Chambers Island on his Boat (until encountering 2 tornados within 2 weeks). He enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and spending quality time with his dogs… He is survived by his wife, Avis; three daughters, Amber (Gary) Lynwood, Dawn Nelson, and Kelly Polzin; five grandchildren, Tina (Ron) Peterson, Dustin Hafeman, Ashley Polzin, Sean Hafeman and Ryan Polzin; two great-grandchildren, Kasi and Brookelyn Peterson; and a most important friend, Chummy. Funeral services will be held at Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 1947 Riverside Ave. in Marinette, on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m., followed by a light luncheon. Interment will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette. Memorial fund contributions will be divided between Pioneer Presbyterian Church and the Menominee Animal Shelter. Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home is serving the family.
